Travel & Tourism

BTEC National Extended Certificate

BTEC Travel and Tourism provides students with an introduction to the travel and tourism sector. It provides students with the underpinning knowledge and skills needed for industry and higher education requirements and to develop transferrable higher skills highly regarded by higher education and employers. Students study the topics of "The World of Travel and Tourism" and "Global Destinations", which are externally assessed. In addition there are two coursework units, one is "Visitor Attractions" and the other is "Managing the Customer Experience".

Entry requirements

Grade C or higher in GCSE English Language. No prior study of Travel and Tourism is needed.

Progression routes from this course

Gaining BTEC Travel and Tourism will support further study in this or any other subject as it provides relevant transferrable skills. Careers paths include employment in travel agencies, air travel and customer service roles.


  • The World of Travel and Tourism; You find out about organisations involved in travel and tourism and how they work together
  • Global Destinations: You find out about the appeal of different global destinations and plan itineraries for different customers
  • Visitor Attractions: You find out about the appeal of visitor attractions, how they meet the expectations of different types of customers and how they respond to competition
  • Managing the Customer Experience: You find out how organisations improve the customer experience and demonstrate customer service skills in a variety of settings

AS Assessment

    Two units are externally assessed. The World of Travel and Tourism is a assessed through a 1½ hour exam and the Global Destinations unit is assessed through a controlled assessment based on a case study issued two weeks prior. The remaining two units are internally assessed coursework.
