Our Assessment, Recording & Reporting

Overview

Following the removal of National Curriculum Levels, the Academy will be using GCSE-style criteria A* - G for all targets and assessments for Year 7 to 11. This will produce a largely consistent system across the key stages.

There will be the unavoidable exception of Year 9 and 10 in English and Maths, following the introduction of numerical grades in those subjects at a national level. Please see below for more details.

Target Setting

We have set aspirational targets with more students aiming to achieve 4 and 5 levels of progress by the end of KS4. Lower ability students will aim for at least 3 levels of progress. All targets set are to be achieved by the end of that academic year. In Year 7 all students are expected to progress by at least one grade. In Year 8 progress of at least another grade is expected.

Targets on entry to the Academy are set as follows;

  • English and Maths are based on the KS2 results in those subjects
  • Other EBACC subjects Science, History, Geography are based on the average of English and Maths at KS2
  • Performing Arts, Art, PE and Technology targets are based on internal baseline assessments
  • MFL follow the same targets as Performing Arts, Art, PE and Technology in Year 7 but differ in Year 8
  • Academy Champions in the Performing Arts will follow a different flight path and are expected to make greater progress

In Year 9 to 11 all subject targets are based on the average of KS2 English and Maths. Except English and Maths whose progress is based on their corresponding KS2 results.

The table below gives a general indication of the yearly flight path over time: (Figures in brackets represent approximate grades using the New Numerical GCSE method which will be reported in Performance Tables for the first time in 2017):

Performance targets

We have introduced the new numerical system for grading GCSE using 9 to 1 instead of A* to C. This will be piloted in 2015-16 for Year 9 and 10 in English and Maths and extended to all subjects in 2016-17.

An approximate conversion is as follows:

Assessment & Recording

  • Formal assessments will take place in all subjects at least once per half term. These will be used to track progress over the academic year.
  • Each assessment will be colour coded so that they are easy to identify.
  • In addition each year group will have a formal exam week.
  • All exams where possible will be executed in the Sports Hall under strict supervision.
  • Band and set changes will take place following these exams

Recording

  • All exercise books will have a record of these colour coded results on the front cover
  • All assessment results will be recorded in Go4Schools

Each data snapshot will record the following:

  • Attitude to Classwork
  • Attitude to Homework
  • On-going Working at Grade
  • Latest Assessment/Exam Grade
  • End of Year Forecast Grade

Reporting (Go4Schools)

  • Data and attitude reports will be posted onto Go4Schools for parents to access at the end of each half term.
  • Each student will receive one full written report during the course of the year
  • There will be at least one parents’ evening per year group. Dates will be posted on the "For Parents" home page.

George Salter Academy is using Go 4 Schools as an online Assessment, Recording & Reporting real time system. Parents are able to view their child's progress in all subjects and have access to their reports online as soon as they are released by the Academy throughout the year.
